The Wait... app serves as a practical resource for New Yorkers aiming to contribute to the cleanliness of NYC's waterways. During periods of heavy rainfall, the app notifies users to temporarily refrain from water usage activities such as laundry and dishwashing. Once the rain subsides, the app provides a reminder to resume these activities. By adhering to these recommendations, users facilitate the functionality of the sewer system, thereby protecting the city’s aquatic ecosystems and marine wildlife.

The app proactively sends notifications during rain forecasts, alerting users when it is advisable to wait and when it is safe to continue regular water use. This feature enables residents to plan accordingly during significant rainfall events that are characteristic of New York City's weather patterns.

It is essential to understand the mechanics of wastewater management; when we engage in daily activities such as laundry, showering, or flushing toilets, this wastewater enters the sewer system. Heavy rainfall complicates matters, as rainwater inundates the sewers simultaneously. This influx can lead to systems reaching capacity, resulting in a mixture of wastewater and rainwater being discharged into local waterways. This phenomenon can be likened to traffic congestion during rush hour—there is a limit to capacity, and when that threshold is exceeded, complications arise.

To minimize impact on the sewer system during heavy rain events, users are encouraged to consider various strategies:
